The focus of the panel is on the understanding that imperialism is a global project. Therefore, the struggle against imperialist forces, like the U.S. and zionsism, is inherently interconnected. The discussion will explore how imperialism manifests across various contexts - through for example military occupation, border politics, economic extraction and racialized oppression structures.

By bringing these perspectives together, the panel aims to highlight the relationships between localized struggles and global systems. Ultimately, the conversation asks how movements can build collective power by sharing experiences and strategies.

How can people in the Global South resist imperialism? What can the experiences of Cuba teach us about the struggle against genocide in Palestine, the Congo, Sudan and elsewhere? At this event, Cuban historian, economist, activist and researcher Yaima Oña de los Cuetos will share her analysis of Cuba’s resistance to the blockade and ongoing imperialist aggression. Drawing on her experience in mass organisations and her research on collective ownership and local development, we will explore how struggles rooted in particular places can form part of a broader anti-capitalist and anti-colonial strategy. This event will provide space for collective reflection: What can we do—from Cuba, from Switzerland and from the different places in which we organise—to help stop genocides and build a world free from empires?

Colonialism comprises of many different aspects and even though most formerly colonized countries have fought for and gained political independence by the end of the last century many colonial structures remain in place today. The world economic system continuously extracts resources from the former colonies to sustain profit for companies in the colonizer countries

In this session we will trace the development of the world economic structure from the colonial system to postcolonial resistance movements built on? international solidarity and state-led interventions for economic sovereignty. We will then examine the response by Western governments and the mechanisms and structures, that have returned the world economy to the quasi-colonial system, we have today.

This event highlights the history, ongoing struggle, and continued resistance of the Filipino people in their fight for national liberation. It explores the role of the diaspora and international solidarity movements in Switzerland, Europe, and beyond in supporting the struggle for genuine freedom from fascism, imperialism, and their local puppet regimes. The event will be in dialogue with Filipino activists from the UK and Switzerland, creating a space to exchange experiences and strengthen international solidarity.

Mahadi Ahmed will read three excerpts from his partly autobiographical novel Die Bahnhofruine. The texts take us to Patras, Greece, and to a place that, for many years, offered shelter, community and a temporary home to people on the move.

The reading will be followed by a conversation moderated by Johann Wiede, exploring border regimes, colonial continuities and literature as a form of political practice. Together, they will discuss authoritarianism, nationalism and solidarity in contemporary anticolonial struggles.

Both authors are published by Edition Das Ausland, an independent Berlin-based publishing house.

As a continuation of the talk series «Tamil Counter-Archives in Switzerland», ஸ்வஸ்தி சிவசண்முகநாத சர்மா / Swassthi Sivasanmukanatha Sarma will speak with Tamil-Swiss individuals about colonial continuities after displacement. We will talk about arriving in Switzerland, about racist violence, and about the myth of Switzerland. How did we, as Tamils, become the “hard-working” laborers and “well-integrated” model-migrants?

In the 1980s, Tamil refugees were the first larger non-European group to arrive in Switzerland to apply for asylum. The racist violence of those years – both state and individual – is mostly forgotten and not talked about. In most cases, Tamil refugees were not granted asylum, and many lived here for decades without secure legal status. In this conversation, we will speak about the practices of resistance and strategies of Tamil Diaspora in Switzerland. We will focus on questions like how our political practice changed in exile, how dangerous it was to hold a clear political stance as a Tamil person and what new strategies had to emerge.

Whether in camps, return centers, emergency shelters, or on the streets: People with an uncertain residence status often live for months or even years in extremely precarious living situations. In our workshop, we’ll start by briefly outlining these situations and then discuss together the various ways to improve them. From assistance with finding housing and paying rent, to “Privatunterbringung” and solidarity-based co-living, to building networks to organize temporary housing: there are plenty of ideas! We’ll briefly cover the legal framework and then discuss specific options.
